Advice from my mom

Back in high school, my friends would come to our house, sit at our kitchen table and ask my mom for advice. She gives warm down-to-earth feedback and is a genius at seeing the bigger picture. Now and again I've shared advice she's given me about things like pregnancy, authenticity, motherhood and relationships. She says things like, "Take gentle care of yourself," she's read every Jane Austen novel, and the only vocabulary word that ever stumped her was "friable."

So! I figured it could be fun to start an advice column, where you can ask my mom anything. If it's a real stumper, we can scout out experts to weigh in, or I'll offer some ideas or we can all leave comments with our thoughts. I love girl talk and figured this could be an awesome way to do it. Feel free to ask anything about relationships, friends, career, family, parenting, worries, fears, hopes, dreams...whatever is on your mind!

Three years ago, I posted about a random idea I had for an articles club. "An articles club would be just like a book club," I wrote, "But we'll read articles. We'd all read the same story—from, say, The New Yorker or Elle—and chat over wine and snacks. It would be fascinating, timely and a much easier commitment than a book club (because, honestly, who ever finishes the book on time?). And it would make the winter feel fun." Well, my friend Anna and I started one, and here's what it's like...
The evening starts at 7:30pm, so Toby can stay up a few minutes late and say hi to the ladies. He gets to eat some guacamole and chips and tell a few jokes before padding off to bed.
He always tries to sneak in a few extra minutes:)
Then the evening begins! We discuss the article and share anecdotes and philosophies. We also drink wine and eat snacks, of course.
We usually choose an article that feels relevant to our lives—typically about friendship, career, work/life balance or relationships.
The fascinating thing about an articles club is how close you get to—and how much you learn about—the women in the group. The conversations get intimate pretty quickly—we've talked about marriage, breakups, parenting, career goals, what success means, the saddest and happiest times in our lives, depression, body image, aging, feminism, religion, everything under the sun. I've learned things about my friends that I hadn't known after years and years of friendship, since we end up talking about such specific, deep topics. It's wonderful.

On Monday night at 10:30pm, Toby walked out of his bedroom, deliriously chatting a mile a minute. His forehead was burning hot, and he curled up next to me on the sofa, while I stared into his eyes and nodded along, trying to get him to come down to earth. I ended up sleeping in his bed to keep an eye on him, and his tossing body felt like a radiator. The next morning, he was still hot and his cheeks had developed a rash. We rushed him to the pediatrician, who then rushed us to the ER, fearing bacterial meningitis. After being poked and prodded for hours, and taking a long nap in my arms like a newborn, teary Toby was proclaimed safe and not seriously ill (with an unidentified virus). Thank goodness!

What a terrifying day. Moments like that make you realize with a shock how intensely you love your children.

Meanwhile, Anton, also feverish but not as severely, stayed home and cuddled with our babysitter. Or, as Alex joked, Anton is so rugged, he was probably chilling in a corner with an empty whiskey glass, chewing on a bullet.

My mom come to visit this past weekend—we miss her so much already!—and we wanted to send her a little gift for helping out so much with the boys, who absolutely adore her. For a thank you gift, I considered sending her flowers or brownies, but in the end, I stumbled on this baguette tray. Isn't it lovely? She and her husband love cooking, and I figured this is the perfect size for a baguette, or you could fill it with olives or nuts.

Today was Toby's first day of school. He was so excited about meeting the teachers, making new friends and wearing his motorcycle backpack (even though the only thing tucked inside was a toy car:). As we were leaving the house, a sweet neighbor offered to take a photo–a big thank you to him for capturing the giddy moment.

Hope all the kids out there are having a good first month!

Help! What color should we paint our living room?

Help! What color should we paint our living room?

Before we moved into our new Brooklyn apartment, the landlords offered to paint the walls white. But when we arrived, the paint was actually a (pretty drab) yellow cream. We'd love to freshen up the living room but are wondering: Should we paint it white or choose an entirely different color? I am officially The Worst At Choosing Paint Colors, so I would be so grateful for any advice...
In the very top photo, you can see our current yellow, as well as a swatch of dove gray that our brilliant friend Jenny Komenda recommended. I'm thinking the gray might look something like Julianne Moore's living room, which could be lovely...
Is black paint crazy? While looking around on Pinterest, I spotted a couple black living rooms. You'd think they'd feel depressing, but with bright furniture and art, the color can actually be cozy. (Although would it feel cave-like during winter?)
Dark blues are GORGEOUS...
Of course, there's something to be said for a fresh coat of white...
Or we could go in a completely different direction and do something like...pink?

Thoughts? Do you like any of these? None? What color is your living room? I'd be thrilled to hear any thoughts!

So cool, elegant, effortless—and with such alluring details, like the lace bodice and low back. What a gorgeous ensemble for a date, especially with red lipstick and a low bun.

For years, I've just biked and walked around town, but now that I'm 35 with two babies, it's not cutting it anymore. I feel creaky and achy, and my back always hurts. (It takes me like 30 seconds to straighten my back after standing up, no joke.) I'd love to get more toned and flexible and maybe take an exercise class. So, I'd really like to know: What kind of exercise do you do?

My history of exercise:

Childhood: Running around.

Teenage years: Daily ballet classes. Riding my mom's NordiTrack in our foyer.

College: Tae Bo on VHS with my roommates. (It was actually kind of amazing.)

One summer in my early twenties: WALKING on the treadmill at the gym every night while watching Felicity reruns. (Team Ben, btw.)

One day in my late twenties: I took a yoga class and was so inflexible that I felt embarrassed and didn't go back.

Twenties, early thirties: Biking and walking everywhere and hoping it adds up to a decent amount. Taking stairs instead of elevators (see: phobia).

So, now that I'm an old lady, I need to bolster my routine. When Jessie raved about SoulCycle yesterday, I was really intrigued. I'm also wondering if I should give yoga another chance? Or pilates, Pure Barre, Zumba? Brazilian Butt Lift?! I would LOVE to hear what you do! Please send any and all suggestions my way :) Thank you so much!

Hi there! We got home last night from our trip visiting family in England. It was an amazing although totally chaotic trip with twenty adults and six rowdy children under four. Anton was teething, so a few nights were NUTS (I had to remind myself: babies be babies), but we loved spending the days on rocky beaches and the evenings drinking beers at the pub. I'm looking forward to sharing a few photos this week.

How have you been? Read anything good? Watch anything good? Cook anything good? Get a new job, or leave an old job? Take a trip? Cuddle a baby? Break up? I'd love to hear what you're up to and thinking about these days...

My sweet bunny Anton turned one this past weekend. I can't believe how quickly his first year flew by. (The first year with our first baby felt endless and insurmountable, whereas, thankfully, we knew—more or less—what we were doing the second time around.) For his birthday, my dad came to visit, and we spent a day doing Anton's favorite activities: eating strawberries and watermelon, taking a million baths, going to swim in our friend's pool, splashing in the sprinklers at the playground and eating just a little bit of sand while I wasn't watching:)

The day he was born, I looked at his masculine face and deep eyes and half-joked to Alex, "He is a bruiser with a heart of gold." And, funnily enough, that has been 100% true as he has grown. He climbs up slides, he puts his face underwater in the bath, he literally shakes off bumps and falls—but he is also shy and gentle and the most devoted friend. He's a lover not a fighter. When he's playing at home, he'll periodically take a break to walk over and lay his head on my knee for a few seconds, like a little puppy, before returning to his toys. And he's always walking over and offering his face up to his babysitter for kisses.

I just adore him and feel so lucky to be his mama. I'm so excited to see what this next year brings.
Also, this photo made me laugh out loud. What a second child's birthday! Since Anton doesn't know how to blow, Toby pushed forward and blew out the candle, while Anton waited patiently in his little paper crown. Oh, Anton, little doll, you get first dibs next year!
